What is a chromatic tuner?

The short answer, before the technical detail.

A chromatic tuner is a tuner that can recognize all 12 notes of the Western musical scale — C, C#/Db, D, D#/Eb, E, F, F#/Gb, G, G#/Ab, A, A#/Bb and B — in any octave, rather than only listening for a fixed handful of strings. Play any single note and it tells you which one it heard, how far off it is, and by how much.

That makes a chromatic tuner the most general kind of tuner available: it doesn't need to know what instrument you're playing, what tuning you're using, or what key you're in. It simply reports the nearest note to whatever pitch reaches the microphone.

How does a chromatic tuner work?

Four steps happen dozens of times per second while you play a note.

1. Capture

Your browser requests the microphone and streams raw audio samples through the Web Audio API — nothing leaves your device.

2. Pitch detection

An autocorrelation algorithm compares the waveform against slightly delayed copies of itself to find the repeating cycle length, which reveals the fundamental frequency.

3. Note matching

That frequency is converted to the nearest note on the equal-tempered scale using a logarithmic formula, since musical pitch doubles with every octave rather than rising in equal steps of hertz.

4. Cents & display

The tiny gap between your actual pitch and the note's exact frequency is converted into cents and shown on the meter, updating live as your pitch moves.

Understanding notes, frequencies and cents

The three numbers on the readout, explained plainly.

Frequency (Hz)

Frequency is how many times per second a sound wave repeats, measured in hertz (Hz). A4, the note most tuners reference, vibrates at 440 times per second. Higher notes have higher frequencies; each octave up doubles the frequency of the note below it.

Note name and octave

A note name like A4 combines the pitch class (A) with its octave number (4). The same letter repeats every octave, so A3, A4 and A5 are all "A" but sound one octave apart, each exactly double or half the frequency of its neighbor.

Cents

A cent is one hundredth of a semitone — the smallest commonly used unit for describing tuning error. There are 1200 cents in an octave and 100 cents between any two adjacent notes, so a reading of +12 cents means you're a little sharp, not a full note off.

Sharp vs. flat notation

Five notes sit between the natural letter names and are written two ways depending on context: C#/Db, D#/Eb, F#/Gb, G#/Ab and A#/Bb. Both names refer to the exact same pitch — which one is "correct" depends on the musical key, not the sound itself.

Tips for more accurate tuning

Most inaccurate readings trace back to one of these.

  • Play one note at a time. Chords or double stops give the detector two pitches to choose between, which confuses the reading.
  • Hold the note steady. Give it roughly a second of sustain — the very first fraction of a second of any tone is the least stable part to measure.
  • Get close to the mic. 15–30 cm from a built-in laptop mic gives a much stronger, cleaner signal.
  • Reduce background noise. Fans, other instruments and music playing nearby are the most common cause of a jumpy or wrong reading.
  • Check your reference pitch. If everyone around you tunes to 442 Hz and your slider is at 440 Hz, every note will read a few cents flat.
  • Let the instrument settle. Temperature changes and fresh strings both cause pitch to drift for a few minutes after a big adjustment — tune once, wait, then fine-tune again.

Common tuning mistakes to avoid

Small habits that quietly wreck an otherwise good tuning session.

  • Chasing the needle too fast. Turn a little, let the note settle, then check again — over-correcting causes overshoot in both directions.
  • Ignoring which octave was detected. It's easy to tune a string an octave off by mistake if you don't glance at the octave number.
  • Tuning in a noisy room. A quiet space matters more than most people expect for a clean, stable reading.
  • Forgetting the reference pitch. A mismatched A4 setting makes every single note read consistently sharp or flat.
  • Stopping at "close enough." A reading that's 20 cents off is often audible, especially in chords — aim for the green in-tune zone.
  • Not re-checking after playing. Pitch can drift as strings, reeds or your embouchure warm up — a quick re-check before a performance is good practice.

What reference pitch (A4) should I use?

440 Hz is the standard concert pitch used by most schools, method books and recordings, and is the default here. You can adjust it from 430 to 450 Hz using the reference pitch slider to match an orchestra, a fixed-pitch instrument like a piano, or a specific recording.

Why does the note reading jump around or seem wrong?

This is usually caused by background noise, more than one note sounding at once, or a very short or breathy tone that gives the pitch detector little to lock onto. Play a single note with a full, sustained tone in a quiet room for the steadiest reading.

Can I tune very low or very high notes?

Yes, within the range most instruments and voices use. Extremely low notes need a longer sustain for the detector to find a stable pitch, and extremely high or quiet overtone-heavy notes can be harder to isolate — both are physical limits of any pitch detector, not unique to this tool.

Does this tuner record or upload my audio?

No. Your microphone audio is analyzed frame by frame directly in your browser and is never recorded, saved or sent to a server. Closing or reloading the page clears everything immediately.

What does In Tune mean on the meter?

The In Tune indicator lights up when your pitch is within about 5 cents of the target note's exact frequency — close enough that the difference is effectively inaudible. Between 5 and 15 cents the meter shows you are close but could still be refined.

Can I use headphones or a USB microphone with this tuner?
