Each pair of neighboring strings is tuned a perfect fifth apart. If A4 is correct and the others are not, you can also check a string by ear against its neighbor once the tuner confirms A4 is centered.

Why accurate violin tuning matters

A few cents off is not always audible on one string, but it compounds fast.

Intonation depends on open strings

Violinists place fingers by ear relative to the open strings and to each other. If an open string is off pitch, every note stopped against it inherits that error, even when your finger placement is perfect.

Playing with others exposes small errors

A slightly flat or sharp violin is easy to miss alone but stands out immediately next to a piano, another string player, or a backing track tuned to concert pitch.

Double stops and chords need precision

Two strings sounded together make tuning errors obvious as beating or a harsh, unclear sound. Well-tuned strings ring clean and let the instrument's natural resonance come through.

It protects your ear training

Practicing daily on an out-of-tune instrument slowly shifts your sense of what "in tune" sounds like. A quick check before every practice session keeps your ear calibrated to true pitch.

Tips for accurate violin tuning

Most inaccurate readings trace back to one of these.

  • Bow one string at a time. Playing two strings together or a chord confuses which pitch is being measured.
  • Use a long, even bow stroke. A short scratchy stroke doesn't give the tuner enough steady signal to lock onto.
  • Mute the other strings if needed. Rest a finger lightly against a neighboring string to stop it ringing sympathetically while you tune.
  • Reduce background noise. Fans, other instruments and music in the room are the most common cause of a jumpy or wrong reading.
  • Turn pegs slowly. Violin pegs are sensitive — a small turn can move pitch a long way. Fine tuners give finer control for small corrections.
  • Let new strings settle. Fresh strings stretch and drift for the first few days; expect to re-tune more often until they stabilize.

Sharp vs flat: what the readout means

Two words, two directions on the peg.

Sharp (♯) — too high

A sharp reading means your string is vibrating faster than the target frequency, so the pitch sounds higher than it should. The cents number is positive, and the needle sits to the right of center. Loosen the peg or fine tuner slightly to bring it down.

Flat (♭) — too low

A flat reading means your string is vibrating slower than the target frequency, so the pitch sounds lower than it should. The cents number is negative, and the needle sits to the left of center. Tighten the peg or fine tuner slightly to bring it up.

Aim for within about ±5 cents, shown as the green "In Tune" zone on the dial. Strings settle slightly after each adjustment, so give a note a second to stabilize before making another correction.

What are the four violin string notes and frequencies?

A standard violin is tuned in fifths to G3 (196.00 Hz), D4 (293.66 Hz), A4 (440.00 Hz) and E5 (659.25 Hz), from the lowest and thickest string to the highest and thinnest. These values assume the standard concert pitch of A4 = 440 Hz.

How do I use this online violin tuner?

What does the cents number mean when tuning a violin string?

A cent is one hundredth of a semitone. The readout shows how many cents above or below the target string frequency your note currently sits. A reading within about 5 cents is generally considered in tune to the ear.

Should I turn the peg or the fine tuner to fix a sharp or flat string?

Large adjustments are easier with the pegs; fine tuners on the tailpiece are better for small corrections once you are close. If the reading shows Sharp, loosen slightly; if it shows Flat, tighten slightly, then re-check because strings settle after each turn.

Can I use Auto Detect for all four strings without switching?

Yes. Auto Detect mode compares whatever pitch it hears against all four open strings and automatically targets the closest one, so you can move from G to D to A to E without changing any setting.

When should I use Manual String Selection instead of Auto Detect?

Manual selection is useful when a string is badly out of tune, because a very flat or sharp note can sometimes sit closer to a neighboring string than to its own target. Locking the string you intend to tune removes that ambiguity.

Why does my A string sometimes read as a D or an E?

This can happen in Auto Detect mode if a string is tuned far enough off pitch that it lands closer to a different open string, or if a sympathetic overtone from another string is being picked up. Switch to Manual mode and select A directly to avoid this.

Can this tuner also work as a general chromatic or guitar tuner?

This page is tuned specifically to the four violin strings. For any other instrument, note, or a full chromatic sweep across all twelve notes, use the main Pitch Detector tuner, which uses the same detection engine without being locked to violin pitches.

What is a good reference pitch (A4) to use, 440 Hz or 442 Hz?

440 Hz is the standard concert pitch used by most schools, method books and recordings, and is the default here. Some orchestras tune slightly higher, around 442 Hz. Use the reference pitch slider to match whoever you are playing with.

Why does my violin go out of tune so quickly?

New strings stretch and settle over the first days or weeks of play. Temperature and humidity changes also shrink or expand the wood and strings, and pegs can slip if they are not seated well. Frequent small re-tunings are normal, especially for newer strings.
